Is it any wonder that a collaboration between two avant-garde fashion darlings, photographer Tim Walker and actress Tilda Swinton, would result in the compelling, surrealist dreamscape of this W Magazine spread? Like Walker, Swinton has long been a proponent for the Art of Dress and many times over its living embodiment. Most recently, she has collaborated with Olivier Saillard, director of Paris’s Palais Galliera fashion museum, on a number of performance art pieces involving dress (more to come soon!). In this May 2013 spread for W, Swinton’s own body serves as the canvas for a stunning display of fashions styled by Jacob K. I’ve provided some of my favorites here, but be sure and check out the complete portfolio: http://www.wmagazine.com/people/celebrities/2013/05/tilda-swinton-tim-walker-las-pozas-cover-story-ss/photos/slide/1
Today, Tim Walker is recognized as one of fashion photography’s greatest luminaries. Born in England in 1970, Walker’s work on the Cecil Beaton archive at the Condé Nast library in London led him to pursue a Photography degree at Exeter College of Art. Upon graduation, his promising future career was confirmed with the third prize as the Independent Young Photographer of the Year. It was not long before he was working as a full time assistant to Richard Avedon in New York City. But it was not until Walker returned to England, that is fashion photography career blossomed, shooting his first fashion shoot for Vogue at the age of 25. The rest, they say, is fashion history.
“Magical Thinking,” featured in the March 2012 issue of W Magazine, is indicative of Walker’s unmistakable aesthetic– a whimsical and magical interpretation of the latest fashions that has been enticing readers of W and Vogue for almost twenty years. The fashion shoot was styled by Jacob K.
